Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
What is a concert version?
The concert version is a much shorter version of the full show. It omits full scenes of dialogue and opts for shorter ones with narration in between the musical numbers. However, our show still features set, scene, and costume changes to help tell the story.
Inspired by a true story.
Bright Star is inspired by a true story about “The Iron Mountain Baby” a five-day-old baby who fell approximately 50 feet from a train into the river below and was found in a suitcase by an elderly couple who adopted the boy in the early 1900s. Martin and Brickell created their musical based loosely on this kernel of truth. They changed dates and locations and conceived of the events that might have occurred leading up to and after the baby was found. The musical starts in the 1940s and flashes back to 1923 in rural North Carolina where the full story is revealed.
